Polka Dot Crazy

Polka Dots 1

Over the past few months I have gotten a lot of requests for accent walls without paint. I began to research different ways we can design without paint or wallpaper. Of course I have done accent wall decals in the past, but for the client that would like a little more to cover the entire wall I have been searching out the perfect happy medium.

I came across a few polka dot wall decal companies that offer a variety of sizes, colors and even shapes. Let me just tell you that before I will use any product in a clients space, I must test it myself. I trust reviews from past clients but I also have to know that the item will work. With that being said, I purchased and played in the A Jolie Design Studio (here in Fort Lauderdale, Florida) with a few companies and their selections.

Some rules to live by while applying any wall decal is for the wall to be clean, and flat. I also suggest that the wall have at least an eggshell paint finish. Walls with texture are hard because they allow for air to get underneath the decal which can make the glue dry out and cause the decal to fall off eventually, this doesn’t mean it cant be done, just use caution. I actually tested the decals on textured walls.

With all of that being said, I found that one company’s product stood up to the test. One thing about applying these polka dot shaped decals all over a wall is that it is a meticulous process, if one dot is off it throws the entire wall off. As a south Florida nursery and children room designer, this is a big deal to get right. If you do not have the ability to make a template to follow along the wall (this is my go to) then take the time to measure out the placement of each polka dot (I have done it this way too…a tip is to also have a leveler handy). I know it seems tedious BUT trust me it is worth it and makes for a much better finished product!

Here are the before and afters of the polka dot wall decal crazy in our design studio. Decals on the wall can be a great alternative when you are looking to bring together a look without painting. I also recommend, as another option, having an accent wall painted a solid color and adding shapes or polka dots to that wall to make your nursery, playroom of kids room all the more fun! With the added bonus of taking it down or changing the design as your little ones change.
